Two pressure-vessel materials pass technical review

In vessel plate there is an informal league table: commodity grades compete on stock, high-end grades compete on approvals. September's good news: 12Cr2Mo1VR and SA-302M Gr.B/Gr.C passed technical review by the special-equipment testing institute — a firmer lane into the strictest applications.

Two grades, two temperaments

12Cr2Mo1VR is the backbone of hydrofining reactors: a 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V system resisting hydrogen attack and temper embrittlement, with narrow melting and heat-treatment windows — a benchmark plate for any heavy-plate line. SA-302M, the American Mn-Mo vessel steel, serves nuclear-adjacent and large storage equipment, where UT and elevated-temperature guarantees are strict.

What it means for buyers

Approvals are about supply certainty: where these grades once waited on mill windows, there is now a standing resource lane — hydrofining and storage projects can schedule plate against project nodes. The ordering experience matters just as much: embrittlement coefficients (J, X factors), step-cooling requirements, grain-size limits — each clause needs to land in the contract.

Domestic substitution in high-end vessel plate keeps advancing; an approval is a start, not a finish. For downstream buyers, every qualified lane is one more card in the negotiation hand.
