EN 10028 and SA516 quick reference

Export orders and foreign-owned projects drag in EN 10028 and ASME/ASTM. The grade names look intimidating — P355GH, P355NL2, 16Mo3, SA516 Gr.70 — but the logic mirrors Chinese vessel plate: similar chemistry, same duty, different paperwork. One reference table below does most of the untangling.

How the EN 10028 family is organised

  • EN10028-2: non-alloy and alloy steels with elevated-temperature properties — P265GH, P295GH, P355GH, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5; roughly China's Q245R, Q345R, 15CrMoR
  • EN10028-3: normalized fine-grain steels — P275NH/NL1/NL2, P355N/NH/NL1/NL2; near Q370R and 16MnDR territory
  • EN10028-4: low-temperature nickel steels — 11MnNi5-3, 13MnNi6-3, X12Ni5; the 09MnNiDR / 08Ni3DR band
  • EN10028-6: quenched-and-tempered fine-grain steels — P355Q through P690QL2; the Q+T vessel and high-strength band

Read the table as guidance, not equivalence: impact temperatures, heat-treatment fine print and UT standards differ. The safe export route is to order directly to the target standard — mills melt and test to EN or ASME rules and issue EN10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificates.

Three common add-ons in export orders

Expect these on export vessel plate: low-temperature impact at the design test temperature; condition stated as N, N+T or Q+T; and Z properties with UT to EN10160 or ASME SA435. Certificates take EN10204 3.1 (works' authorised inspector) or 3.2 (third-party countersigned); class documents follow the owner's nominated society.
